Dr. Michael Giannamore Obituary

Dr. Michael Pietro Giannamore, 72, took his seat in heaven on Friday, August 27th 2021.

He was born on June 4th 1949 in Steubenville, Ohio to the late Michael “Skip” and Elizabeth “Betty” Augustine Giannamore where his parents raised him with strong ties to his Italian heritage and instilled in him the importance of family.

Mike “Spider” graduated high school from Steubenville Catholic Central in 1967 where he held the position of Student Council President, was a 4-year lettermen in basketball and baseball, and quarterback of his freshman football team. He was also a member of the Post 33 American Legion 1967 District 10 Championship team.

His passion for baseball continued in college at Ohio University where he played centerfield for the Bobcats. He then began his degree in medicine at the University of Guadalajara and completed his MD at Rutgers University College of Medicine. Mike completed a residency in internal medicine and infectious disease at Hackensack Hospital and New York’s St. Luke’s Hospital.

Affectionately known as “Doc G”, Mike returned home and started his medical career with practices in Steubenville and Follansbee. He was Chair of the Family Practice Department and Infectious Disease Committee at Ohio Valley Hospital where he also met and fell in love with his wife, Elaine, who was a pediatric nurse before she joined him working in his private practice.

Mike served as Chief of Staff at St. John Medical Center where he was an active member of the Utilization Review, Education, and Ethics Committees. During his time at Trinity Health Systems, he dedicated his time serving on several committees including the Cardiology Steering Committee (Open Heart Unit). He was on the Board of Directors as Vice President of the Physicians Hospital Organization as well as a member of the Physicians Advisory and Quality Assessment committees. Over his career, he precepted numerous medical students, nurse practitioners, pharmacy students, and physician assistants for colleges in OH, WV, and PA. He compassionately served his community with kindness and patience for over 47 years.

In addition, Mike volunteered his time every Friday night for 35 years on the Big Red football team’s sidelines as the team doctor. Passionate about supporting the area where he grew up, he was also a member of the Steubenville City School Board for 12 years.

Mike’s enthusiasm for sports was something his three children inherited from him and bonded them closer as he spent years supporting and coaching their many sports endeavors. He never turned away any athlete or spectator, regardless of their team, with medical concerns or injuries. His intelligence excelled but his heart and humbleness made him unforgettable. Mike always put the needs of others before himself and his calm personality radiated to everyone he met.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Elaine (Febo); three children Dr. Kaylin, Michael (Kathleen), and Dr. Mallory (Najee Murray); sister, Maddalena (Gary) Repella. Mike’s warm and caring personality will be endlessly missed by everyone he knew including his many aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren, friends, students, coworkers, neighbors, and thousands of patients.
