Ernest "Erni" Carducci Obituary

Ernest “Erni” Americo Carducci passed away peacefully and faithfully on February 28, 2023, at the age of 104. He was the beloved husband of the late Sarah, the love of his life. He was the son of proud Italian immigrants, Sante and Agatha Carducci. He is survived by his children Dr. Ernest (Mary), Robert (Fran,) Toni (Henry), Alfred, and former daughter in law Amy. Loving grandfather of Robert (Erin), Ernest (Hayley), Nick (Sarah), Hank, Anthony, Mary, Sadie, and Alfred.  Loving great grandfather of Ernest, Stella, Mae, Mora, and Jack. He lived an amazing and legendary life.  Born in Steubenville, he was part of its history. Ernest grew up with Dean Martin and was the oldest living member of the Big Red football team at 104 years old!

A hard worker and successful businessman, Ernest worked as a mailman at the U.S. Post Office, the Louis Berkman’s Scrap Yard, and the Rex Cigar store.  He was one of the founding partners, along with his brothers, brother-in-laws and friends, of the Capri Sausage and Meatball Carry Out store that was founded in 1972. His son, Bobby, carries on the Capri tradition, a hallmark of Steubenville’s history. The store was named after a restaurant in South Bend, Indiana, where Notre Dame was located and was Ernest’s favorite colleges along with the College of the Holy Cross, The OSU, and the University of Cincinnati.  He loved the City of Steubenville and its people! However, his most important role in life was being a great husband and a loving papaw. Ernest was a thoughtful and beautiful man, much like his late wife.

You could always find Ernest honoring his Italian heritage by making his legendary marinara sauce, smoking a good cigar, breaking a good piece of Italian bread, and toasting his family with a great glass of Italian homemade red wine.  He was a very devout Catholic and avid sports fan.  Ernest was a faithful longtime member of the Triumph of the Cross church, formerly St Anthony’s, and a lifelong member of the St. Anthony’s Men’s Club. He was also a longtime member of the PAC (Polish Athletic Club).  He loved to golf and was a  member of the Labelle Golf Course, where he met lifelong friends and never knew an enemy.

We honor and pray for an amazing man! In lieu of flowers, Ernest would have wanted everyone to donate to their favorite charity in memory of his love and extraordinary zest for life.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will follow at 11:30 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
