Pasquale "Patsy" Minella Obituary

Pasquale “Patsy” John Minella, 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 23, 2023 at Summa Hospital in Akron, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 1, 1938 in Steubenville, to Michael and Angeline Minella. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Michael and Vincent Minella.

Patsy was a lifelong resident of Steubenville, graduating from Catholic Central High School in 1956. He loved the Crusaders and was a familiar face at athletic events, working as a ticket taker with his best friend John Serafini and as a coach for many years. Patsy went on from high school to serve in the Army Reserves, and retired from Wheeling Steel in 2001 after 37 years of service.

Patsy was a dedicated husband, adored by his children and grandchildren, and became a loving friend to anyone that he met. He touched the lives of hundreds of young men as a coach, mentor, and father figure. There wasn’t a place you could go where someone didn’t know him. He loved going to the beach every year with his family and cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He will be remembered for being able to recite every play of every game from any sporting event for the past 50 years.

He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Georgianna “Dolly” Minella; brother Richard (Pam) Minella; special “little brother” Johnny”Peppy” Stepanovich; daughter Laurie (David) Whiddon of Akron and son Marc (Shawna) Minella of Steubenville; and his loving grandchildren Derek (Kristen) Whiddon, Danielle Whiddon and her fiancé Nathaniel Bergan, Zane and Kaiden Minella, and bonus grandson, Gavin Bozica; best friend and cousin Nino (Emily) Lancia and many other special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Spending time with Patsy and listening to his stories was like finding an endless supply of gold, and his friends and family will treasure the wealth of love he shared each and every day of his life. He will be remembered for his loving kindness, booming voice, strong faith in the Lord, and genuine care for everyone he met. Although he will be with us now and forever in our hearts, he will be truly missed.

The family would also like to give a special thanks to Dr. Jordan Lockhardt, the chaplains, and the entire nursing staff on the Acute Palliative/Hospice Care Unit at Summa Hospital in Akron. You are all truly angels here on earth.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 3-6 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Saturday at Noon at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Burial will take place at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations sent to the Acute Palliative/Hospice Care Unit on the 3rd floor at Summa Hospital, 525 East Market St., Akron, OH 44304 in honor of Patsy Minella.
