Yvonne "Vonnie" Yoder Habowski Obituary

Yvonne “Vonnie” Arlene Yoder Habowski, 81, of Wintersville, formerly from Steubenville died peacefully after an extended illness on November 8, 2020. She was born July 5, 1939 in Steubenville to the late Blanchard “Pep” E. Yoder and Loretta Mae Yoder (Vernier).

She was preceded in death by her Husband of 47 years Joe “Red” Habowski; her parents, and her beloved sisters, brother, and brothers-in-law, Jean Carrocci (Larry),  June Starliper (Don), Charlette Starliper (Robert), and Jim Yoder; and her niece, Pam Starliper.

Yvonne is survived by her daughters Tina Habowski of Wintersville and Suzette (Ken) Gendjar of Farmington Hills, Michigan.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Patricia Yoder;  nieces Debbie Firm (Paul), Diane Starliper (Sam), Tammy Hickman (Greg),  Kim Thompson (Walter) and Amanda Jacobs (Brian); Nephews David Starliper (Martha), Michael, Keith, and Peter Carrocci (Richard Hill), and Jason Yoder (Stephanie) and numerous great nieces and nephews.  She loved to serve as the family matriarch and attended choir concerts, football games, softball games, birthdays, and grandparent days for her great nieces and nephews- Ashley and Matt Firm, Gordana, Maranda, Mariah, and Kayleeana Starliper.  She is also survived by the lights of her life, her grandchildren, Garrett and Kayla Gendjar, and attended baseball games, recitals, birthdays, religious events, and hockey games in Michigan.

She worked at the Steubenville Filtration Plant where she met Joe, our family restaurant, Pep’s Restaurant and Catering, Bright Way Bakery, and as a secretary and then insurance agent for Equitable Life Insurance.

She was an avid sewer, quilter, and baker. As she always said, anyone that was nice to her would get a tray of Christmas cookies.  In spite of the fact that she has dealt with various health issues over the years, she always met her health issues with a smile and positive mental attitude.   It was her health care providers that received many of those trays of Christmas cookies. There are babies all over Ohio and Michigan that received one of her special handmade baby quilts.  She was a Big Red Football Fan, Legion baseball fan, and a Fantastic Hockey Grandma.

Her faith was a central part of her life and she was a member of Holy Family Parish and previously St. Peter’s Parish.  She was a proud graduate of Steubenville Big Red High School class of 1957. She was an active member of several organizations while her health allowed including: Holy Family Catholic Women’s Club, Holy Family St. Francis Society, Reunion Committee for the Class of 1957, Lunch Bunch Girls of ‘57, Public Employees Retirees, Historic Fort Steuben, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Leisure Group Quilting Group and a founding member of the Renegades Quilting Group.
